This essay points towards a critical reorientation of Chantal Mouffe’s radical democracy project, based on an analysis of the limitations of her approach to the political potential of affects. What I propose is a material recuperation of the political-social forms of “identification” that her discursive theoretical framework fails to adequately recognize and integrate, based on a transferential (Dean) and participatory understanding of the parties. In order to defend a “social-republican” citizenship, regulated by the social virtues necessary for the maintenance and strengthening of democratic commitment, against the threats of democratic disaffection, political polarization, and populist manipulation.
