Abstract

At the beginning of the 18th century, the new Christian Isabel Gomes lived in São Luís do Maranhão, known to many as “Rainha Esther do Maranhão”. In this article, we present aspects of its multifaceted resistance to Catholicism imposed by the Portuguese metropolis based on the complaints contained in the Auto da Inquisição that ordered Father Carlos Pereira, commissioner of the Holy Office in the city of Maranhão (Inquiry of 1731) and the 119th Prosecutor, belonging to the archive of the Torre do Tombo Archive, Lisbon - Portugal.
