Abstract

Zorobabel Rodríguez was a Chilean lawyer who worked in public and teaching activities during the second half of the 19th century. His legal training was very close to the French jurist and economist Jean Gustave Courcelle-Seneuil, who lived in Chile between 1855 and 1863 and taught Political Economy at the University of Chile School of Law. Rodríguez, as a student of Courcelle-Seneuil, received teachings of economic concepts, institutions and doctrines, which would constitute a good input to strengthen his liberal ideas. Through his extensive public work, Zorobabel Rodríguez contributed to the dissemination of these ideas, and later he devoted to teaching political economy. Although he was born in Quillota, he later lived in Santiago for several years, and then returned to Valparaíso, a city where he developed a civil service, political and teaching work, through classes and the writing of several texts. Among them, his Treatise on political economy (1894) stands out, which, in the opinion of its author, was written as an intermediate version of the works of Courcelle-Seneuil and the book authored by Miguel Cruchaga . The text was used in the teaching of political economy in Valparaíso, developed by Rodríguez himself and also by some of his successors. The purpose of this work is to outline a brief profile of the public and teaching activity of him, and to highlight some characteristics of his work Treatise on political economy. The text supports the idea that he was a precursor of the teaching of political economy in legal studies in Valparaíso.
